reachhard: Earlier I watched “The Announcement”, a documentary presented by ESPN highlighting Magic Johnson’s retirement due to him contracting the HIV virus.  The whole program took me back to the very day I watched that somber press conference as a 7 year old boy - teary eyed and an absolute wreck as I watched my favorite basketball player at the time and one of basketball’s true legends, retire prematurely due to a disease that I hadn’t really heard of up until this tragic moment.  Such emotions were briefly conjured up again at some points of the program, but what struck me the most was the insight I was able to gain by looking back on this event through older and wiser eyes.  Magic’s courage, optimism and grace in handling the situation were always there, yet this documentary blew the dust off of it to reveal to me now just how such characteristics are so vital in tackling some of life’s difficult predicaments.  At the time, contracting HIV was an automatic death sentence, “dead man walking” status if you will, as stated by Karl Malone in one interview on the program.  However, for Magic to realize the influence he can have on shedding light on the disease and using his celebrity status to inform, educate and uplift people was truly some heroic stuff.  Now, looking in on what happened with him and being able to digest and process the magnitude of how he handled the situation, it gives me more inspiration to draw from when faced with any setback.  The positivity that Magic exuded is of such genuine and heartfelt quality - something truly worth noting.  What’s more, we can use everybody and anybody in our lives to draw strength from as well.  There’s plenty examples of tremendous courage all around us, it just takes a moment to reflect on their display of it.  Whether lead by faith, fear, courage, determination or a healthy combination of all, it’s good to know that having a positive outlook and perseverance in such really does go a long way.
